Barbados’ newest Independent Senator, Carol Lady Haynes, has vowed to honour and uphold the 300-year-old tradition of parliamentary representation in Barbados.

The widow of late St Michael South Central MP Sir Richard Haynes took the oath of office before Governor General Sir Elliott Belgrave at Government House today.

While stating that she was looking forward to serving in her new capacity, Lady Haynes, who is well known in Barbados and across the region for her work as a medical doctor, stressed that her patients were of paramount importance to her and would not be left out.

She replaces former banker and talk show host Tony Marshall, who was recently appointed Barbados’ Ambassador and Permanent Representative to New York.

Today the island’s newest senator was warmly welcomed as she took her place in the Upper Chamber.
